TechTraction’s Friday Finds for 06/29/07: Font Freak
I’ve been helping my kids setup up their own blog (Sisters in Blog) as a way to keep them motivated to write on a regular basis (the key to improve your writing skills). They think it’s cool to have their own blog, and I think it’s a clever way to help keep their writing skills sharp through the summer.
We’ve worked together to select the domain name, set up WordPress, and search for just the right theme. And while they’re still looking for just the right theme, I’ve been working on a header banner that fits their personality and domain name.
To create this banner I wanted to use something other than the fonts installed on my machine. I wanted something different and fun (arial and times new roman are anything but different and fun). In my search for the right font I discovered Font Freak, an amazing collection of freeware, shareware and demo fonts for both the Windows and Mac.
My Thoughts on “Font Freak”
Font Freak brings together over 5000 fonts for both Windows and Macintosh machines. Unfortunately not all fonts are available on both platforms but fortunately when a font isn’t available for a specific platform, it’s usually the Macintosh that’s missing. All fonts are listed in alphabetical order with their name serving as the sample text to display the font. You have the option to download one font pack at a time or the entire collection in one large zip file. When I was browsing for fonts I did NOT encounter any pop-up ads or other annoyances. Also, the site is not littered with confusing ads on the sidebar. Font Freak is a very clean and easy to navigate. Also, based on my experience with Font Freak, it appears that the majority of the fonts are freeware.
If you are looking for some different fonts for some special project, you MUST check out Font Freak.

I recently found Font Freak when trying to come up with a different look for a printed brochure I was working on. I was skeptical on downloading the “free” fonts but like you, I have not encountered any installation issues or spyware. Their font list is incredible, and I would say that if you cannot find what you need at Font Freak then it hasn’t been designed yet.
Yes, I have to give credit where credit is due — font freak was original “your find.” Thanks much for the tip.
My kid’s blog is uses one of the fonts from the site for their banner title. Very fitting for their blogs theme. Of course, I have yet to see my kids actually write their first blog post but that is another discussion altogether.
I know this is an older posting but another great font site…dafont.com They have some amazing fonts and best of all they are FREE!
