TechTraction’s Friday Finds for 08/17/07 - Ad Rotator

As you can clearly see TechTraction does not shy away from advertising. Since I haven’t had a lot of luck with Google Adsense (probably because of my poor approach), I decided to go with banner ads that offer products and services I think might interest my readers. I signed up for Commission Junction and Share-a-Sale affiliate programs and was overwhelmed with the product options.

I manually tweaked the banner ads on a regular basis but that approach became very tedious very fast. I wanted a way to automatically cycle through a list of banner ads and I found my answer with Ad Rotator by Angsuman Chakraborty.

Ad Rotator Installation and Configuration

The plugin installs as easily as any other plugin out there. To configure your banner rotation list, you need to create a simple text file and paste in the banner HTML that you normally paste into your site’s theme files (typically the header.php file). The more banner HTML you paste into the text file, the more ads the rotator can cycle through. Want to have a particular ad appear more frequently than others? Paste it into the text file several times.

Overall Thoughts on Ad Rotator

I’m happy with the the plugin overall but my site does appear to be loading more slowly. I’m not certain if it’s Ad Rotator or if it’s the Bumpzee or MyBlogLog widgets in the sidebar. For now, however, I’m not going to worry about it because Ad Rotator is certainly much a better approach to banner ad rotation than my previous manual approach.
