What’s the Risk of a Focus Change for an Existing Blog?
There is no shortage of advice on how to succeed with your blog. I’ve written a couple of posts suggesting that consistent posting and starting slow are key elements for success. Of course, I believe I have violated my own advice (but that’s for another day). What I’m wondering now is whether a topical shift is a sure fire way to drive your own blog into the ground. In other words, if I decide to start writing about something other than my stated tag line (Technical and “gripping” insights to blogging with WordPress) will that switch alienate my current readers (albeit small as it is)? Can TechTraction survive such a change? And for that matter, can any blog survive such a change?
Change is inevitable
Yes, if you haven’t guessed by now, I am considering a change in focus for TechTraction. Lately I’ve found my area of focus too narrow. Focus is great, but if focus stifles your ability to write, then something has to give. Hence, we’re back at the familiar piece of advice: blog your passion.
The Absence of Passion
I enjoy writing about blogging and the technical side of WordPress, but passionate? Obviously not. I easily find numerous subjects in the category of tech to write about, but because of my selected focus I’m forced to put a blog spin on everything (e.g. see my recent post about the Kindle from Amazon). To solve my problem, I have two choices: broaden TechTraction’s focus, or give up. I’m selecting the later.
Not a Redefinition — Just a Broadening of Topical Focus
The challenge I face is how do I redefine my focus without losing my current audience? I suspect current readers are here because they’re interested in reading about blogging. My posts have been mostly about blogging in general. The technical WordPress posts have been far less. Overall my posting, as of late, has been fairly inconsistent. Bottom line, I don’t think there are many people that see this blog as a significant source of WordPress blogging information. Therefore, I believe I can safely broaden my topical focus without losing many readers.
Similar to the line from a movie I can’t remember:
“It’s not a gang. It’s a club.”
What I’m proposing is not a redefinition it’s a broadening of topical focus. In other words, I’m need to blog about other technical subjects to stay alive.
Stay tuned and keep reading. If you like the change, great. If not, thanks for your past support.
