Friday Finds for 02/15/2008: Blog Security

In some respects, the Internet is the “wild west” of bits and bytes. Anyone that steps into this digital frontier runs the risk of becoming a victim of some type of personal scam, malicious computer virus, or insidious malware undermining their computer. And with an individual’s increased involvement in the “digital wild west” comes an increased risk of falling victim to some cyber annoyance/crime. Blogging is one of the ways of increasing your risk to becoming a cyber victim; however, there are some steps bloggers can do to “beef-up” their security.

During episode 33 of the WordPress Podcast (2/4/2008 hosted by Charles Stricklin), David Airey’s recent blog attack was mentioned. The result of the discussion was a list of several useful links related to blog security which you can find under item 7 of the show notes back at the podcast’s web site. These references are some fantastic resources and can help nearly every blog stay safe and secure. And while no security is perfect, anyone that blogs owes it to themselves and their readers to protect their site to ensure they remain up and available.

  1. Thanks Bret. On my way to check out that episode now.

That’s some hefty captcha you have in place!

  2. Glad you’re going to listen to the episode. Not sure if you ever listen to that podcast but it must be kind of surreal to get mentioned in such a forum. :)

As for the Captcha…LOL. Yeah, well the spam comments were over running my Akismet spam queue. It was becoming impossible to scan the queue for false positives. I’m certain I accidentally deleted more than a few real comments because I just didn’t see them in the sea of isolated spam. The captcha has really cut down on the spam (some still manages to get caught) and it hasn’t really discouraged the real comments — at least that’s the way it appears to me.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. FYI: You made the short list of my Favorite Blogs in the sidebar. :)

  3. Wow! I’m in there with just two other blogs?!

Daily Blog Tips and The Instigator Blog are both excellent, so it’s great to see you put me in such company.

  4. Your site looks great! I found your blog via Google while searching for personal computer security and your post regarding Friday Finds for 02/15/2008: Blog Security looks very interesting to me. I have seen many other so-called sites and they have been far from good quality.Your site has all the key ingredients to pulling in visitors.
