Friday Finds for 04/11/2008: The Myth of Self-Imposed Overtime

Still working more than 40 hours a week? Are you doing it because it’s mandatory overtime or because you think those extra hours are some sort of badge of honor? You can’t do much about mandatory overtime but you’re only kidding yourself if you think extra hours makes you better than the next employee.

Russell Ball of Caffeinated Coder wrote a great post about the futility of self-imposed overtime. The post is geared towards programmers and their misguided attitudes about overtime programming; however, I believe most of the points asserted in the post can apply to any profession. A highly recommended read for all programmers and a recommended read for even non-computer professionals that do overtime when its not required.

  1. I think it is much better to pursue several streams of income, than to tie yourself up with overtime.
I wouldn’t want to burn myself out for another person’s gain, particularly when it’s not really much gain for me as far as future earnings.
So I think Ill follow this advise and go home from work now. Dave
