Sorry this didn't work for you. Since writing the article I've migrated to Vista so I can't go back and recreate the steps outlined. For what it's worth, I've been successfully using this approach with Vista Home Premium. Probably not the answer you wanted to hear. Sorry I can't be of more help.

This didn't work for me
It came up with a dialog box saying:
'The ability to execute folder pairs from the commandline (-R option) is now available from SyncToyCmd.exe.'

it made no sense to me

if anyone could help it would be appreciated

To automatically synchronize when you plug in a thumb drive or USB storage drive/device create a file at the root of the device folder structure called "autorun.inf". Edit autorun.info and include the following lines in the file:
[AutoRun]
open=c:\program files\path\to\synctoy\synctoycmd.exe -R "Folder Pair Name"

Now every time you plug in, synctoy should fire off.

I'd take that idea a step further. I'd like to see an auto sync kick off when I inserted a "particular" memory stick. Even better, different memory sticks would sync different files and folders. I know some memory sticks "auto" start some utilities pre-installed on them. I believe someone that knows how to program such auto start utilities could create a program that would do just what you have described.

What would be really cool is the ability to sync on connection (e.g. of a memory stick).
