Friday Finds for 11/14/2008 – Deal Locker

When does the Christmas shopping season “officially” begin? I used to think it was the day after Thanksgiving. These days, however, retailers waste no time converting from Halloween to Christmas. Regardless when the season starts, shopping for deals this year will be on the top of everyone’s list. One web site that might be able to help is a place called DealLocker. Check out Rick Broida’s (CNet) post about this coupon collecting site to learn about how it works and where to find it.

Back in January of this year I wrote an article addressing the question of whether it was possible to clone a SIM card from a GSM cell phone. The article explained why such action wasn’t possible with a SIM card reader and basic software. Since that article, the reader comments have been consistently flowing in and the article remains one of my most frequently read items. Despite my explanation, some readers have claimed that they have succeeded at what I said was impossible. Unfortunately, when pressed for details, responses where either nonexistent or lacking critical details. Fortunately, all that changed on 9/26/2008 when reader DonJuan posted a detailed response that might have solved a nagging cell phone problem.

Does the Average Customer Understand Comcast’s New Bandwidth Policy?

Well, most (but not all) Comcast customers knew it was coming: notification of Comcast’s new bandwidth restriction policy. I got my email notification late last week and while I understood the technical aspect of the email I questioned whether the same could be said for the average Comcast customer.
